I appreciate your sentiments Rachel and agree, although I think you misconstrued my point. Likely my failure as a writer. That first paragraph is written very much from the voice of the anti-gun activist I used to be. Intentionally so. It's meant to be a bit of a hyperbolic example of the way I used to think; the mindset that kept me from ever considernig buying a gun previously. It is not the way I think about the gun as an owner.
